Butterfly Review 2010

A weekend of pretty poor weather coincided with having just completed Patrick Barkham's 'The Butterfly Isles' and I decided to take the opportunity to review my butterfly sightings for 2010. My interest began in 2009, with the aim of expanding my limited knowledge to encompass more than just the most common butterflies such as the Red Admiral, Peacock and Small Tortoiseshell. I've made plenty of mistakes along the way but am pleased with how much I've seen and can identify confidently without the aid of a guidebook.  So here's what I saw during 2010, and I look forward to the coming year.

  1. Enjoyed looking through your 'here's what I saw during 2010' which included two I've yet to see myself, Marbled White and Swallowtail.

Nice one, and a HAPPY NEW YEAR to you Linda.

  2. Excellent review Linda. I amazed myself by seeing 30 species in 2010 but not a Swallowtail. Good luck for 2011 and let's hope we manage to find and photo a few more species. Cheers FAB.

  3. Thoroughly enjoyable trip through your biutterfly year of 2010. I visited Norfolk for the first time this year but unfortunately the wrong time for Swallowtails and have never seen a Marbled White yet either. Here are 2 species for you to try to get this year. Dingy Skipper and Brown Argus, preferably Northern Brown Argus. Intersting to see how you come on. Keep up the good work.

  5. What a beautiful journey through your 2010 butterfly collection, Linda. I have been planning trips to see more new Butterfly species this year. I rather enjoyed Patrick Barham's book but suspect you might really like this outstanding DVD describing Paul Wetton's butterfly year in perfect videos. It's well worth the small charge. Best wishes, Emma

  6. Hello Pete, thank you, I was very pleased with both of those, especially the Swallowtail during our trip to Norfolk! Let's hope this year proves to be a bountiful butterfly year.

Hello Frank, thanks, 30 is a good number well done. I look forward to seeing how we get on this year.

Thanks Johnny, that sounds like a challenge! I'll see how I go, I have a feeling I might struggle but who knows? As long as I spend lots of time out and about and get a few decent pics to show for it then I'll be happy.

Hello CB, thanks, I thought I'd give it a try, it was good to go through the blog and catch up with what we did manage to see.

Hello Emma, thanks very much, I'll be sure to check out the DVD you've mentioned. I enjoyed The Butterfly Isles very much although I can't ever imagine wanting to take on that challenge myself, it all seemed very stressful. I like to progress at a steady pace and see what comes my way. Also he didn't have enough snack stops for my liking!

    Best wishes everybody.

    Linda
