Relatively quiet today at the edge of Becket Park woodland, raindrops and remnants of beech leaves added interest to the woodland drizzle.

Beckett Park woodland
On the way into work a solitary Song Thrush sang by the railway track near Headingley Station. A couple of Mistle Thrush fed a stone's throw away on the rugby pitch. In the wooded area behind Queenswood Drive shops, Blackbird, Nuthatch, Chaffinch, Robin, Blue Tit, Long Tailed Tit and a Great Spotted Woodpecker.

I wonder why Beech hangs on to its dead leaves for so long. There is a Beech hedge near me which seems to have virtually all of last years leaves still in place.
ReplyDeleteYes its interesting John. An online search didn't really come up with a definitive answer. Suggestions included that it retains the leaves to protect the tender new buds as the beech doesn't produce secondary buds. And that in beech and oak the abcission layer doesn't form until their wood is older. Thanks for your comments. L
